It had occurred to me that if I could just forget about one thing in my life, I could be a happier person. But it is just not possible to forget something you want to forget. Makes you wonder why it is so easy to forget something very important and something that you can’t afford to forget. It does force one to think that maybe its just how your memory is; that you have no control over it. It’s definitely not the case, though.
It could be something you did, something you didn’t or couldn’t, something you had or something you’ve lost. Everyone has that one thing they’d kill to just be able to forget. No? Then you’re life must be perfect! But, everyone I know including myself could be a totally different person if they could manage this. It’s not that we are always thinking about this one sad and/or stupid thing, it’s that it is never gone that makes it as irritating as it is.
The reason you will never be able to forget it is that you’re always trying to forget it. Forgetting is a process that requires absolutely no effort from you. And it is indeed a requirement. It might just be the one thing you can achieve by doing nothing, but note that there is no other way. The very reason you forget things is that you stop thinking about them sooner or later. Things you do not want to remember are often the things you’re always thinking about. Sadly though, you can’t control what you think unless you’re a saint, monk or you have developed your brain to a level that’s unknown to normal people. But, once you do stop trying, once you stop caring enough to try to forget, the memory will start to fade. Eventually, everyone will manage to forget everything.
While you’re trying to forget that one damn thing, you may end up forgetting something important or worse, you can end up having something new that you’d want to forget. So, why not just leave it as is.
